When you first encounter Grahf, you'll find yourself up against a sand worm that seems immune to your mech's attacks. Here is when you have to use your gear's Deathblows. The game doesn't actually inform you that your gear even has Deathblows up to this point so you might find yourself just blasting the thing until all your EP runs out. They don't even involve the same buttons as when Fei uses them outside the gear but you should see them once your Danger bumps up a little bit after hitting the triangle button.

If you're having an issue with a boss, you might want to utilize Bart's Wild Smile ability. Bosses that continuously heal(or have someone on healing duty) become immensely more beatable once you start keeping them busy at staving off Wild Smile.
